Dog Trainer with dog

Erin Britton

CSAT, KPA-CTP, FFP, CPDT-KA

I was fortunate enough to get added on as a volunteer at the largest dog training company in Toronto, and eventually hired part time, and then full time to teach classes, take on advanced behaviour cases, and even teach other trainers. This is where my skill and knowledge really expanded, and I learned just how much I DIDN'T know. I was immersed in the positive reinforcement dog training world, and I couldn't get enough.

I started my career with dogs in Toronto, as a dog walker. You learn a lot in that job. One dog in particular made me want to figure out what the hell was wrong with her. Shadow chasing, crazy pulling, squirrel obsession, generally just a nutcase. So I started learning about behaviour and how to modify it, and started working on little pieces of it with various dogs I worked with daily. But I was feeling my way through the dark.

Understanding the "why" of behaviour changed my life,

and not just professionally.

Big city life sucked though, especially once I brought home my own puppy, my lovely Australian Shepherd Dill. I thought I was ready. Holy crap, I was not. Having a herding dog in a busy city was insane. He turned two, and we decided to move to Hamilton. More space, cheaper rent, waterfalls. He continues teaching me on a daily basis, as does my incredible cat, Fennel (yeah, we're just a bunch of herbs over here).

Now we spend our days hiking; training tricks, obedience, and treiball; and practicing not being an ausshole (get it? Aussie?). Yes, Fennel too.

My true passion is education, and I'm so lucky to have found a career that lets me do that with animals AND people. I can't wait to help you and your dog achieve your goals.

Dog Training Philosophy

Labels suck. Below I've tried to outline how I do what I do without boxing myself in. You get it, right?

R+ based

Call me a cookie pusher. I'm committed to finding the least aversive way to teach and modify behaviours. That means no pain, fear, intimidation, or coercion. Lots of treats. You may have guessed that from the company name.

Whole-Ass

I don't half-ass it. I expect the same from the people that choose to work with me. I get that life is crazy busy, and that training the dog might not be your highest priority. Your expectations need to match your commitment for us to work well together.

Inclusive

Diversity is beautiful. Regardless of how you identify, where you are from, your physical differences, or the colour of your skin, I'm here to help you.
Same goes for our dogs. I work with all breeds, big and small, young and old.

Functional

Training with me means we start where we need to start. That's usually with the basics. If we don't have those, we can't get the loose leash, the recall, the polite greetings. You want functional, you need a foundation. No skipping steps.
